How is DBF file size calculated in Shape Reader?

I am aware of the 2g file size limitation for DBFs but the DBF on my shape file is only slightly more than 1g and I'm still getting the f"file limitation" error on the Shapefile Reader when it is reading the source file.   Another shape file with a slightly larger dbf file runs fine.  Am I missing something?  Does any one know how the file size is calculated?

No none of them are and I have more info.  Initially it seems that I may have been allowing a default writer setting  for 3D files. Redoing every thing (making sure it was set to 2D) seemed have fixed it on the file I mentioned above.  But now I am working with a large POI file which initially had a dbf of 1.7 gb so I divided it into 4 files all well under 400 mb.  They  have more than 2mill records each.  And I am againgetting the error.  Could the number of records be a limitiation?  BTW:  it is a shape2shape translation and I am adding fields but not more data.
