Question

We want to run FME on a standalone batchserver, next to a dedicated ArcGIS-server

We want to run FME on a standalone batchserver, next to a dedicated ArcGIS-server. Is there a way for FME to run without being on the ArcGIS server. We want to use the FME server to run but not stress the ArcGIS server/services.

I have found this:

https://knowledge.safe.com/articles/1517/notes-on-fme-and-esri-versions-and-compatibility.html

And this:

https://knowledge.safe.com/articles/315/geodatabase-formats-missing-greyed-out-or-have-unm.html

Which was a problem on our workstation. But that is cleared.

But do we need to install FME server on the ArcGIS server we have? I hope not!

@redgeographics, I have seen this. But Does anyone know if the FME server can run stand alone maybe with an ArcGIS server engine install.

We don't want to get an extra ArcGIS licence tangled up in this. For our complete OTAP street it would mean 4 more ArcGIS licences extra.

Hi @overlord,

ArcGIS Server Engine isn't enough.

The minimum requirement is to have FME Server "Engines" on a system with ArcGIS Server. So you can either install both FME Server and ArcGIS Server on the same system and license ArcGIS Server software. Or you can distribute FME Server Engines onto another system where you have a licensed ArcGIS Server. The FME Server Core/Web/Database/Share can be on another system.

The FME engines, whether run by Desktop or Server required to have locally installed ArcGIS software in order to function with the Geodatabase SDE format and File Geodatabase format. There is one File GeoDB API format that does not require licensed ArcGIS Software.

The Engines need the ArcObject DLLs and to be licensed.

Cheers,

Steve.

Ok, We have installed the ArcGIS Engine and 64 bits background processing. And we can run FME server without issues.

So this is minimal requered for running FME without a full ArcGIS server installation.

Can I confirm you installed ArcGIS "Engine" and 64b BGP and it is working? If so... carry on!

@overlord, @steveatsafe, @helmoet,

Well what a coincidence on the ArgGIS and FME Server problems.

I installed this week an upgrade to FME Server 2020.x x64 at customer location and after a service talk about FME Server and ArcGIS combination, they mentioned they had installed ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.1 32-bits, if I remember correctly, together with ArcGIS Background Processing x64 and this seems to work very well until now!

So I hope this wil help lots of people to solve their problems with the FME Server / Esri SDE licensing combination.

I'll at least pas this on to our customers who also have problems with this.

Kind regards,

Krien Guijt
