Is the installation of ArcGIS Pro software required by using the ESRI Geodatabase Writer for SAP HANA?

Hi,

Soon I will migrate the graphical data (shape and Oracle Spatial) to the ArcGIS feature class on SAP HANA (ArcGIS Pro 2.4). This test migration should be done with FME Desktop Workbenches and the productive migration from FME Server.

Question: In case of using FME Desktop Workbenches, must ArcGIS Pro software be installed on the computer or are there workarounds (copy DLL's,...)?

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks and many greetings

Ewelina

Hello @mhab,

ArcGIS Pro is required to read from a SAP Hana Geodatabase. As I don't believe ArcCatalog even supports Geodatabase on SAP Hana. For more information please see: https://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000012246

To clarify, while you cannot use ArcGIS Desktop(Map/Catalog) with FME to connect to your SAP Hana Geodatabase, it may be possible to use ArcGIS Server if you have that installed locally. We have not tested connecting to a Sap Hana Geodatabase with FME when only ArcGIS Server is accessible.

ArcGIS desktop with the 64 bit background processing should also work and allow you to use 64 bit FME Desktop.

Hi @ewenepal2019,

For FME Desktop, if you are working with any of the Esri Geodatabase formats requires ArcGIS software to be installed and licensed on the same machine as FME.

There are a few ways to enable Esri formats on a machine. This is outlined in this article, Notes on FME and Esri Version Compatibility - specifically the table under: "Esri Formats Supported by my FME Version"

As @erik_jan mentioned, one option is to use FME Desktop 64-bit and ArcGIS Desktop with Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop and 64 bit Background Geoprocessing. The other option for FME Desktop 64-bit is to have ArcGIS Pro installed on the same machine.

The answers up to now do NOT refer to SDE on SAP Hana !

We currently have a problem to connect to a SDE Geodatabase in SAP Hana.

FME 2019.1 64-Bit, ArcGIS Desktop 10.7.1, Background Geoprocessing installed , Hana Client installed

Error message is:

Installed ArcGIS version is '10.7.1'

Could not open the Enterprise Geodatabase. The error number from ArcObjects is: '-2147220944'. The error message from ArcObjects is: {This version of the Geodatabase client is incompatible with the dataset and cannot open it.}

Please ensure the connection parameters are correct (server=`<ipadress>', instance=`sde:hana$<ipadress>:<port>', user=`UT_USER', password=`***', database=`', version=`')

A fatal error has occurred. Check the logfile above for details

We successfully checked the connectivity to the HANA database with an ODBC test utility.

Should this type of access be possible, or do we definitely need ArcGIS Pro installed in order to access SDE geodatabase in SAP Hana ?

Thanks

Michael
