MRF (Meta Raster Format) is a file type designed by NASA but released as open-source GDAL compliant. It is specifically designed to enable very fast access to raster datasets that are stored in a cloud environment. It will be supported in ArcGIS 10.3 and onwards.

Thanks for making us aware of this @alenalindsay . I was in touch with the GDAL team and at this time the MRF format is not part of the GDAL distribution, which makes it more tenuous for us to embrace it. If you have connections to the team that built this, please lobby them to work with the GDAL group to have MRF become an official citizen. We'd be happy to assist in this as well, but ultimately the format authors would need to bless the marriage of MRF and GDAL official. I'd think that would be in everyone's interest. Once it is part of GDAL we'd be very happy to roll it into FME very promptly thereafter.

Update -- it is looking like this could come to pass. We're in the loop and will advise if/when it shakes loose.
