I would be keen for a "Annotation Default" in workbench options that would control whether annotation was on/off by default when opening a workbench (defaulted to on of course). I would just like to open workbenches and see a clean bookmarked interface, which I could quickly turn on annotation if I needed too.

Feels like having a toolbar button and hotkey to toggle the display of annotations might do what you want. Is the issue that there is too much annotation and it clouds understanding the data flow?

Yes, a toolbar button would be good. Like the Prompt button is in 2016, which can always stay on across different sessions. And yes, its about seeing a nice clean interface that I can quickly see data flow and is not congested. It can even be hidden in the customize toolbars, as long as I know where to get it.
