Hi everyone,

Here's a post for sharing ideas and activities, for organizing social events, or for just passing on messages during the 2022 User Conference.

Note: I can't guarantee to be monitoring this page. Best to tweet me on FMEEvangelist to get a more reliable response.

Here's some information that I have:

Things to Do In Vancouver

Here is a Safe webpage with some suggestions. This includes restaurants, activities, and similar.

There is also the community page from 2017 that also has some suggestions.

Official Event Activities

Official activities include:

  • Soccer
  • Cycling
  • Yoga
  • Fun Run
  • Hackathon
  • "Rec Room" activities

You can find full details on the conference website.

Messaging

The EventMobi app has an Activity Feed where you can post messages:

...and you can click on a user and send them a personal message too:

It doesn't look great for group chats, especially private ones. I recall most people used WhatsApp during the last conference.

So... I've created a Community group chat. Obviously, I don't want to post the link publicly, so message me (email or DM on Twitter) and I'll share it with you.

Finally, there will be a notice board at the Community Cafe at the conference, so you can always leave messages on there for other community members.

Feel free to post any info, comments, messages etc to this thread.

Thanks Mark.

Soccer! Thanks @mark2atsafe

Great initiative, Mark. Here's a few of my favorite addresses and activities based on previous UCs, leaving out the "regular" pubs etc. which you'll pretty much end up at regardless ;-)

Eating

  • Sushi bar Maumi ($$$), maybe one of the best sushi bars in Vancouver? It's really tiny, however, so you'll need to reserve well in advance. The Omakase menu is well worth it! http://www.sushibarmaumi.ca/
  • Ramen DANBO ($), very informal but really tasty ramen soups. Watch out for lines going out the door at peak hours: https://ramendanbo.com/our-menu-vancouver/
  • Tony's fish and oyster café on Granville Island ($$), the seafood platter is excellent and the their sea-side terrace is worth a visit: http://www.tonysfishandoystercafe.com/menu/
  • Earl's kitchen and bar ($$) for that very stereotypical north-American dining experience with more TV sports than you'll ever want to watch. Granted, it's a huge chain but it's OK for what it is, and their drinks are pretty good. There's probably at least three of them just downtown, e.g. at Robson: https://earls.ca/locations/robson

Shopping

Activities

  • Rent a bike ($) and do a tour of Stanley Park. No cars and more or less completely flat, with great downtown and harbor views. There are bike rentals pretty much all over downtown Vancouver.
  • Day trip: take a sea plane to Victoria ($$$, departure is just in front of the UC) and enjoy the spectacular views from the tiny propeller plane. If you're lucky, the pilot might even let you sit up front and pretend to be the copilot (as long as you don't touch anything). For a perfect time, have the afternoon tea (in the most British sense possible) at the Empress, it's simply amazing: https://www.teaattheempress.com/menus/ You may have to reserve. To digest, have a walk in the peaceful Beacon Hill Park with ocean views.

To add to the sea plane suggestion, EagleWing tours do a package which includes a flight and a whale watching trip which we did last time after the userconference

We actually spotted Orca from the plane and managed to direct the boat to find them :-)image
