It would be great if FME could check if all destination files are free for writing, and not currently locked by another application, during startup. Especially AutoCAD oder Excel file are often affected by existing locks that cause the workspace to fail at the very end causing some considerable aount of wasted time. If a destination file is locked the workspace should stop before any reader / transformer starts to work.

Agree. I'm doing this through a custom transformer at the moment, checking for the existence of relevant lock files. This is a bit cumbersome as I need to ensure that nothing gets written before terminating the translation. Especially ESRI Geodatabases can break if attempting to write into or drop/truncate a locked table. When reading from and writing back to the same table, this can mean that the data is lost.
