Hi FME'ers,
Here are the answers and results to yesterday's quiz. I heard that it was quite a hard one this week. Not my intention, but it's good to have a tough one now and then! It would be boring if we all got 6/6 every time.
Answers1) A new transformer coming out in FME2019.2 will be the...
- RasterSharpener
- LineSegmenter
- PointCloudColorSetter
- MinecraftServerConnector
- RangeExploder
It's the RasterSharpener. FME2019.2 will be coming out VERY soon (either today or tomorrow) and will include not just this transformer, but also a RasterSegmenter and RasterRegisterer. So if you are into raster data, 2019.2 is worth looking out for.
I also have a post tomorrow about a new parameter in the Tester (and some other) transformers, so watch out for that.
As for the others:
- LineSegmenter: I made that one up, so who knows what it is supposed to be or might do!
- PointCloudColorSetter: Another one I made up. There's already a PCColorScaler, which is pretty much what a ColorSetter would do anyway.
- MinecraftServerConnector: Another made up one. There is no transformer - or plans - to connect to a Minecraft server. Sorry if you were excited for a minute!
- RangeExplode: That's an existing transformer on the hub, which you can check out and try.
2) It's so easy to make new Twitter accounts, and can get quite addictive. Which of these choices contains a Twitter account that is totally unrelated to FME?
- FMEJobs, FMEBlog, FMECloud
- FMEUC, FMEWT, FMEDoctors
- FMEBetaBuilder, FMEChannel, FMEpedia
- SafeSoftware, DaleAtSafe, DonAtSafe
- FMEEvangelist, FMELizard, FMEZipster
Wow! We do have a lot of accounts, although not all are active. I suppose when we rebrand that involves creating new social media feeds to match. All of those accounts are related to FME except... FMEWT. I've no idea what that account is (some sort of gaming?) but it certainly isn't the FME World Tour, for which we use the #FMEWT hashtag instead.
If you had to choose which accounts to follow, I'd suggest SafeSoftware, FMEUC, and (dare I say it) FMEEvangelist.
3) Null Island falls on the edge of which two UTM zones?!
- 0/1
- 60/0
- 16/17
- 30/31
- 59/60
I suppose technically this isn't an FME issue, but I figure we're 99% geographers so you might know. Null Island is at 0,0, which is also (I believe) the south-west corner of UTM zone 31N. So it's at the border of zones 30 and 31.
4) When you create a schedule in FME Server to "Repeat on Interval", the relevant time zone is...
- Your own local time zone
- The local time zone of the server
- UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)
- The local noon time zone of Safe's HQ in Vancouver, Canada
- The first time zone specified in the data
Your FME Server host might be in a different timezone, but Server's web interface will present datetimes to you using your own local time. For example, I have no idea where this server is located (I suspect pacific timezone), but it asks me to set up a schedule using my timezone (central):
i.e. it really was 11:51 for me when I opened this dialog. The only time the server timezone is important is when you manually set a CRON expression. Then it would need to be in the timezone of the Server.
Oh, and as much as I'd like to think it, time does not revolve around Safe's HQ, whose local noon time zone would be UTC-08:11 (if my calculations are correct).
5) One user presentation at the 2019 World Tour showed how to use FME to process play-by-play data from which sport?
- Football (American)
- Football (Soccer)
- Baseball
- Ice Hockey
- Dwyle Flunking
It was ice hockey. Bizarrely the presenter was not from Canada, but from... Florida! Who'd have thought it? Even more surprisingly, it didn't use a movie title reference!
Incidentally, dwyle flunking. I'm sure you knew that wasn't the answer, but perhaps you wanted to know what that is. It's certainly a little... odd!
6) What do I add to a connection in Workbench to halt a translation and switch to feature inspection mode?
- Stop-point
- Watch-point
- Break-point
- Pause-point
- Match-point
You add a break-point, like so:
Now you select Run > Stop at Breakpoints from the menubar and run the workspace. When a feature reaches that point, the translation is paused while you inspect the feature.
It's a great tool for data inspection and debugging. You can find out more information in the FME Desktop basic training manual.
Oh, and did you know you can even edit the breakpoint to make it conditional? For example, stop here only when a feature has attribute value = xxxx (or whatever).
ScoresNo perfect scores this week. I guess it was harder than normal. But plenty of folk with 5/6, which is pretty great. One person with zero correct. Yikes, I'm sorry if I was too tricky this week.
The average score was a low 3.25.

Easiest question this week: Q6 (Break-Points). 21/24 folk got this correct.
Hardest question this week: Q4 (Schedules). 3/24 correct. Most people said they are created with the Server timezone, which is sort of correct. But Server presents it to you as your own local time zone, to make it easier for you, and that's what I was trying to get across (this sort of question is why we are really precise in the wording in our certification exam).
I notice several people are hoping for a MinecraftServerConnector transformer, and I'm really sorry to disappoint you!
Final ScoresAs I mentioned, I'm ending this set of quizzes this week. There will be another starting next week, I just want to create a final league table.
So... having said that, congratulations to our joint champions for this round: @srg and @jdh
They scored a total 21 out of a possible 24 points, which is pretty amazing. I'm creating a special community quiz badge for them to display with pride on this site. Also, we're working on a new, real-world, prize specifically for people who excel in the FME community. We've got approval, it's in the design phase, and I'm adding your names to the list of users to receive them, as soon as we have some available!
Here's the final league table:
I've also made this into a , in case you want to do any processing or visualization using FME!
Thanks for taking part in the quiz over the last few weeks. I hope you are finding it fun. I'll take stock of how it's gone and try to refresh the workspaces etc before we start a new round next week.
