Hello everyone,

Welcome to the first quiz results on the new-style FME Community. This week you were up against the entire staff of Safe Software - where the answers were chosen as the most common choice.

Quick Note

We've done 30 User vs Safer quizzes now, and with the change in community and ongoing hackathon, I'll think we'll take a short break in the quiz, and restart in September.

Maybe I'll change the format, but either way, I think it's a good time to reset the scores. So the scores at the foot of this page are final!

So let's see how you all did...

Answers

1) How do you collapse a bookmark on the FME Workbench canvas?

  • Set it in the bookmark properties dialog
  • Using the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C
  • Click the drop-down arrow on the bookmark header
  • The Collapse Bookmark toolbar button
  • All of the above

The only correct answer is that you click the drop-down button on the bookmark header:

Quiz-CollapseBookmark

I don't usually do "All of the Above" questions, so you can pretty much tell that wasn't the answer!

Safer Answer: Click the Drop-Down Button (votes: 0-0-17-0-0) (Correct)

2) Safe recently ordered face masks for all staff members in a range of designs. Which of these was a design on offer?

  • I ❤️ XML
  • FME Lizard face
  • A Don or Dale face
  • Zipster on Mars (2013 splashscreen)
  • The IP number 255.255.255.0

OK, this would have been an easy question for Safers, but could you get the correct answer? It is a Lizard face, which goes quite nicely with the eyemask from the World Tour:

It's not the IP number 255.255.255.0. That would be a "subnet mask" 😏

Safer Answer: Lizard Face (votes: 0-18-0-1-0) (Correct)

3) When you export a custom transformer, the five parameters available are:

  • Name, Category, Insert Mode, Password, Save Location
  • Name, Category, Description, Help, History
  • Name, Category, Group By, Group By Mode, Parallel Processing
  • Name, Category, Description, Use Markdown, Attribute References
  • Name, Category, First Pet, Mother's Maiden Name, Credit Card Number

When you export a custom transformer, it looks like this:

Quiz-ExportCT

These are the items we need to know in order to create the fmx file (what to call it, where to save it, and so on).

Safer Answer: Name, Category, Description, Help, History (votes: 4-11-0-1-0) (Incorrect)

4) The Transformer Gallery on our web site got a major update last week. Which of these is NOT a new item of functionality?

  • There is the ability to select a random transformer and view its information
  • There is an option to switch between the normal view and a list view
  • The transformers are now spread across several pages
  • The URL now changes to match the filters or sorting (making sharing easier)
  • There are now more detailed usage statistics about each transformer

Yeah, the gallery got a great new update and now looks like this:

Quiz-TransformerGallery

There are now multiple pages, but that's OK because the search option is pretty much instantaneous. You can also switch between a table or grid view. The URL does match the updates, so you can share the URL with settings applied.

Did you find the random transformer tool? It's at the top of the screen:

Quiz-RandomTransformer

Just hover over the transformer icon and a random transformer appears. You can click that and open up the info for that transformer.

So, the only item that we don't have is detailed usage statistics. But guess what? We're working on that and will have them shortly!

Safer Answer: More detailed usage statistics (votes: 1-0-0-1-12) (Correct)

5) Which of these items is NOT an operation in the FME Server API?

  • /cleanup/tasks/jobs
  • /info
  • /tokens/<username>/<token name>/disabled
  • /transformations/jobs/completed
  • /user/favorites/workspaces

This is a sneaky one, because there is an operation to enable/disable a token, but it's called "enabled" and is an on/off toggle.

Quiz-APIToken

Safer Answer: tokens/username/token name/disabled (votes: 5-1-8-0-0) (Correct)

6) The support team have a special bot (actually, it's Jen) who posts what message to us all each week?

  • Monday's knocking on the door!
  • Time for Tuesday!
  • It's Wednesday my dudes!
  • Thursday! Thursday! Thursday!
  • Itttttttttttttttt's FRIDAY!

How would you know that? Well, I used it in last week's answers post:

Quiz-ItsWednesday

It's always accompanied by a video (this is a great example) and just gives us a pick-me-up during the week.

Safer Answer: It's Wednesday My Dudes (votes: 0-0-13-1-3) (Correct)

Results

So here are the results...

  • Quiz Week: 37 (July 27/2020)
  • Number of Entries: 32
  • Best Score: 6
  • Worst Score: 1
  • Average Score: 3.84
  • Perfect Scores: 5
  • Easiest Question: 5 (29)
  • Hardest Question: 6 (8)

Who'd have thought a question about an obscure part of the FME Server API would be the easiest question?!

So how did you do as a group?

  • Beat Safe: 5
  • Equalled Safe: 6
  • Were Beaten by Safe: 21

So there we are. A win for the Safers. The overall score:

  • Users 22 Safers 8

The user table:

Quiz-UserLeagueTable

The Safer table:

Quiz-SaferTable

SO... A big congratulations to you users for beating the Safe staff so comprehensively over the last few months, 22-8. You are definitely the winners.

Individually... for Safe, Ryan Cragg is the clear leader and the marketing team were the ones that produced the best results over several Safers.

Your individual results are a little less clear, due to the variation in number of entries. Again, I'm going to leave it up to you folks to decide who is the winner.

If anyone wants access to my database and spreadsheets to produce your own statistics and results, and maybe pick an individual winner, then do let me know. It would make a great hackathon project.

But great kudos to @srg to @redgeographics and to @warrengis for being the three persons who took part in 30/30 quizzes! Well done folks. Regardless of your win/loss percentage, that's a great achievement.

It was a fun ride! Thanks for these quizzes that were as entertaining as enlightening :)

Looking forward to the next iteration!

@srg had a fantastic win record, with a lot of perfect scores as well.

See I told you one more perfect round would kick me out.

@mark2atsafe  the way we would tally tournaments with a different number of bouts between entrants is 1 pt for a loss, 2 pts for a win, with a tie being a loss for both. Since we're competing as a whole it would be easy to adapt it to W: 3, D:2, L:1.

Right, but the problem I have with points like that is users who missed a week - for whatever reason - miss out. So... I came up with W: 1pt, 😨 0.5pts, L -1pt, and zero points if you didn't enter.

So basically you don't lose out by not entering, but you do if you enter and lose.

With that scoring system, the results are as follows:

Quiz-UserLeague2

I think that's a reasonable scoring system. Either way srg is the definite champion with you close behind. With respect to joeri and allwin, their scores are a little lower, because they didn't take part so often.

But even this doesn't take into account the number of correct answers, which is another potential factor!

@mark2atsafe Thanks for the detailed statistics from a different perspective.

I prefer that scoring system. 😉

The perspective I have is that trying and failing is better than not trying at all. I don't like scoring systems that can end with participants having a negative result.

Someone who entered once and drew shouldn't have a better score than someone who 5 times, drew 3 and lost 2. Especially in a setup where the point of the tournament is to learn new things in a fun way.
