If you hadn't heard, the new iPhone 7 launches later this week with one very obvious feature removed: the headphone socket!

So, as a fun challenge, what do you think the FME equivalent would be? i.e. what part of FME seems very important, but you could imagine being removed if we were bold enough?

For example, I know @aaronkoning thinks we should remove the Navigator window in Workbench. The Navigator! I know. It's crazy talk. But Aaron thinks we could move everything onto the canvas and perhaps he is right...?

So what do you think? Reputation points to the best (and funniest) answers.

Mark

PS: We aren't going to jump into action and do what you say, it's just fun to speculate. Because even if you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

OK. No one else has mentioned it, so I am going to jump in with this one.

What if we removed Shape support from FME?

Now that really would be like removing the headphones socket. Do you think everyone would move to a better format (wireless headphones = geodatabase?) or would they stop using FME?!

It'll never happen - but just imagine the outcry if we did!

CAT and Shape forever!

I can't recall if we ever did this, but for one old FME Idol I wanted development to create me a Workbench without the canvas! See if anyone could create a translation by keyboard shortcuts alone. Just imagine an iPhone without a screen. It could be amazingly small. I think Apple are missing a trick there.

As long as I get access to the Python startup script, I'm game!

I think the display-less phone has been done, though

That's already been done: FME cancels support for 325 formats, rebrands to XME

Nice answers! I've dished out some reputation points. Always interesting to hear your views - and sarcasm ;-)

Nothing in the past 15 years has stopped people from using shapefiles, so I doubt this will, even though they're the WIndows XP of GIS.

Actually, autolayout is making a comeback in FME 2017. The betas will have it shortly. But thanks for remembering it!

FME Functions and Factories...oh wait that was in Hans answer about Classic mode

I think Safe Software was early to adopt this trend in FME (the new iPhone 7 launches later this week with one very obvious feature removed: the headphone socket!, including the AirPods).

Here is the proof:srg-fmeheadphonesocket.jpg

Hope this is acceptable and agreeable to everyone!

Just learnt that years before the iPhone 7, the Game Boy Advance SP (Nintendo) eschewed the standard as well

Remove Python 2.

Remove Python 2.

It is on the roadmap! Well, at least stopping supporting it...

It's been two years since my above comment and nothing has changed 😛 Various specialised tools like noise modelling software only take shapefile input, so as long as that does not change...

Remove Python 2.

Hmm, FME 2019 will go quite a ways down this path...

I can make all sort of replies about the relative responsiveness of Safe's development team to the community and Apple's.

But I'll just say that I'm quite happy with Safe. There's just that one promise Don made at the FMEUC2014 about focal analysis tools that never materialized...

Hey, I think the Convolver may have addressed that. (4 years later...)

Heck, since then the Shapefile even has a Twitter account (https://twitter.com/shapefiIe) and a lifetime achievement award (https://twitter.com/FMEchannel/status/874695567410163712)

Removing description text in bookmarks and moving it to annotations (looks worse) would be the one that pop up in my mind.

I think that you could remove entirely Data Inspector. Everyone in here will agree with me, it is useless!

I like the way Apple thinks. After all, they worth 1.02T $US$ !!!

Please take note that every sentence of my post is sarcasm.

Remove FME Desktop completely, no local installations. Replace it with a FME WebEditor and a FME WebViewer.

The functionality needed to be ported from FME Desktop to FME WebEditor: 80% - figure out which 20% of FME Desktop is not used, or least used today.

The functionality needed to be ported from FME Inspector to FME WebViewer: Add FFS-reader to a Leaflet/OpenLayers-client to display the data.

Remove unused transformers - so the number of transformers decrease in 2019

Remove unused formats - so the number of formats decrease in 2019

Remove support for any other coordinate system than 4326 :)

I would like to work with an older version of FME, the one used in the mid-90s.

Make it work on Windows 10 though.
