Hi FME community,

I was trying FME SERVER 2015 with a recorded tutorial and I was really impressed by its simplicity and strength. However I would like to go in deep about FME SERVER foundation, maybe some technical literature related to the PUBLICATION-SUBSCRIPTION PARADIGM.

Please could anybody give me suggestions about articles or even better, books about the paradigm FME SERVER use?

Thanks in advance,

Raul

Hi

the FME Server documentation is a good starting point: http://docs.safe.com/fme/html/FME_Server_Documenta...

The illustration should hopefully clear it up a bit.

Basically, consider the topics as the many-to-many link between the publications and the subscriptions.

The training manual for FME Server will also help: https://cdn.safe.com/training/course-materials/FME...

My biggest difficulty is in remembering which is a publication and which is a subscription. Basically, publications are incoming notifications. Subscriptions are outgoing.

I like to think of it using a newspaper analogy. A news reporter publishes articles to the newspaper (using topics to identify the content) and a reader subscribes to the newspaper articles (using topics to identify the content he is interested in).

David and Mark,

Thanks for your quick answers! I am not sure if am going too deep in technical details, but I wanted to fully understand the patterns and paradigms FME SERVER uses, this because of the following statement:

  • "FME Server lets your organization address diverse spatial, and non-spatial, data requirements using a single enterprise solution. FME Server provides a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) that brings all the capabilities of the FME platform to a server environment, creating a full Spatial Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) capability."
So Pub/Sub and Topics is a messaging pattern used in SOA. I was wondering, maybe FME SERVER also uses other concepts that come from SOA (ESB Enterprise Service Bus?).

Maybe there are some articles that talk about FME SERVER from the SOA perspective, or some SOA books that could help me in fully understand the FME SERVER architecture. Could you suggest any?

Thanks for your help,

Raul

I've asked the Server team if there is anything we can share. I'll let you know...

Hi Raul.

We don't have any written information but I'm sure we'd be happy to discuss the setup by phone or email, if there are particular questions you would like answering. You can either email us (sales@safe.com) and ask to set up a call with someone from the Server team, or fill out the form for a personalized demo on our web site at http://www.safe.com/live-product-demo/

I hope this will be of use.

Regards

Hi Mark!

Thanks for your answer, I will get a bit more familiar with SOA and ESB reading the material I have on hand and after that I will ask to setup a call with someone from the Server Team.

Thanks a lot!
