Is there a practicable way in FME to extract 3D objects or solids (indoors and/or outdoors) from point clouds?

I found posts back from 2015, lots of feature requests and ideas. What's "State of the Art"?

Inside / outside of FME... (conc. Revit but also other data models)

Bye, Marion

Hi @mabaho,

Thanks for your question! Yes, you can absolutely work with point clouds to extract 3D geometries. The first resource that comes to mind is 2D to Simple 3D Model: Extrude Building Outlines. For this example, having a 2d set of data with building outlines and a building ID to match on are necessary to make the boundaries look clean and straight (instead of wobbly). The solids then come from extruding to the height given by the point cloud.

In my experience through these Point Cloud Transformation tutorials, we tend to create surfaces using point clouds, and having a boundary polygon lets us create better-looking extrusions into solids. Maybe the Community can share some other experiences and suggestions as well! Hope that helps with getting started!
