Hi,
in theory, yes, without problems. In practice, you may(!) encounter tiny bugs in the backwards compatibility that will be hard to debug/reproduce on the desktop edition because of the different versions.
Just be aware that you can very easily install both FME Desktop 2012 and 2014 on the same machine (they share the license).
Trying it out with your workspaces will be the best answer to your question.
