Is there a performance difference with Excel writer in 64 bit ?

I am running a workbench to split transactional work orders onto different worksheets in an .xlsx writer using FME 32-bit 2021.1.6

 

We have hit the 2gb memory ceiling due to the number of rows, as a work around I have installed the 64-bit version, but now i find where before it took a few minutes to write out the .xlsx output in 32bit the 64-bit seems to slowly parse through the feautres as it write them out, its much slower over an hour and I stopped the tranlsation.

 

Is the performance really so different in 64-bit?

@philliebe​ What version of FME 64bit did you install? There is an issue with Excel writer performance in FME 2022.1 that we're working on - the fix will be in FME 2022.1 build 22625 and higher). You can download previous versions of FME (i.e. FME 2021 build) here that do not have the Excel writer performance regression

I'm experiencing a similar problem, whereby using the FeatureWriter with xlsx format was previously taking much less time to write fairly large sets of data--in one case around 150,000 rows. Is there an expected timeframe for a GA release that will fix this problem? Thanks.

@philliebe​ @pmcpherson​ The Excel performance regression in FME 2022.1 has been addressed and will be available in FME 2022.1.2(Build: 22625 or higher) or FME 2022.2 betas. The FME 2022.1 patch should be available week-of 5 Sept.

Which version did you revert to? I tried reverting to 2022.1.0.0 (20220704 - Build 22618 - WIN64), and the problem persists.

Installed 2021.2.0.1 (20211112 - Build 21789 - WIN64) back to mirror the 32-bit version we were using previously

Okay, I tried that on my local machine, and using 2021.2.01 DOES solve the slow Excel writer issue. Unfortunately in my case I had updated a bunch of workflows with newer transformers and already promoted them to Server, which I also updated a couple weeks ago. I'm old enough to know better, but this is a good reminder of the risks of updating too early. Hopefully the new release next week will solve for this.
