Hello everyone,

This is the FME news for 19th January, 2022.

Favourite Transformers Poll

Thank you to everyone who took part in my "Favourite Transformers" poll over the last couple of days. Here's the top-ten list of favourites:

Top10

  1. FeatureReader
  2. TestFilter
  3. AttributeManager
  4. FeatureWriter
  5. HTTPCaller
  6. AttributeCreator
  7. FeatureJoiner
  8. Tester
  9. FeatureMerger
  10. SpatialFilter

So in my not-very-scientific method, the FeatureReader is the FME Community's favourite transformer ever!

WUW-2022-01-19-1

Some statistics:

  • There were 65 different transformers mentioned.
  • There were 4 FME Hub transformers on the list.
  • The highest Hub transformer was the NoFeatureTester (22nd).
  • The least-loved favourite was the JSONFragmenter.
  • Of the most-used transformers, 6 of the top 20 were not anyone's favourite!
    • Inspector, AttributeRemover, AttributeRenamer, StringReplacer, AttributeFilter, Counter

I'm not sure why no-one likes the Counter! But none of my personal favourites made your top-ten, so I'm obviously no judge. My highest-ranked favourite: the Aggregator (13th).

Feel free to download the full list and see where your favourites were in the rankings.

Learning Resources

Did you like the recent update to FME Cloud? If you haven't tried it yet, then we have a new video available all about Getting Started with FME Cloud

We also have a newly published tutorial on using FME with Satellite Imagery. I recently saw a user request for more info on this subject, plus FME has a number of related readers for popular satellite image services, including Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Planet Labs. So I hope you find this tutorial useful.

User and Partner Events and News

There are always a number of events going on in the world of FME. Here's a list of current ones that I know about:

  • Resurrecting State Highway Logs: This is a presentation for which you need to be a member of the FME Transportation group on LinkedIn. You might be a little late (it takes place today) but you can still sign up to the group and they may have recordings.
  • Norkart (in Norway) is publicizing their FME World Tour event. It looks like they will be in-person whereas, sadly, the Safe event is now virtual only. For more details see the Safe website and if anyone would like me to highlight a particular event, do let me know.
  • Modern geoSystems has published a new transformer to the FME Hub for automated testing: the DatasetValidator. Testing actual results against expected output seems to be a hot topic right now, so go and check it out.
  • In New Zealand, Abley has published another of their excellent Fireside Chat series. This one is all about Point Clouds. I recommend you watch this interesting series and congratulations to Gavin on the renewal of his FME Professional Certification.

FME Jobs

Not jobs as in "FME Server" but jobs as in "employed to use FME"! I came upon a few opportunities that I thought you might be interested in.

I seem to find jobs mostly in Canada, although perhaps that's because the search engines know where I live! Firstly, the City of Niagara Falls is looking for a GIS Administrator, and FME is listed as a requirement.

Also, Suncor is looking for a GIS Application Specialist in Calgary, and Telus is looking for a GIS Technology Architect in the Vancouver area. In both cases, FME is listed.

SpatialDNA (Ottawa) is a Safe partner and is looking for an Integration Specialist with FME certification.

Anyway, if you know of any FME-related jobs outside of Canada, or are yourself looking for someone, please let me know and I'll advertise it here.

Minor News

The FME Hub testsuite is now running 2021.2.2.0 (build 21806) so you can submit tools with that version.

The Garmin Mapsource reader/writer was hidden in FME 2021.1 and from 2022 all support will be removed. Don't forget that there are still other supported Garmin formats, such as Garmin GDB.
