Currently I am moving from FME 2018 to FME 2022, but during the FME Desktop Advanced trailhead training it says that some transformers only have cosmetic changes. I want to know what the main, commonly used transformers which I can advise my team to always upgrade in their workbenches.

Thank you in advance

Hi db_apha,

Generally, you don't need to upgrade transformers. That is of course, unless you read the "Show Changes" and see that the version notes suggests performance gains.

In my experience, any 'Spatial%' transformer that does overlay, filter, clipper or spatial analysis performs better in newer versions. The statisticsCalculator

To open the Version Information window, click the Version Information tab (bottom right), or select Version Information from the View menu.

Some of the benefits of upgrading transformers are:

  • Performance and functionality improvements
  • Bug fixes and enhancements
  • New features and options

Other tips

  • If there are multiple transformers, start upgrading the first transformer in the canvas and the changes flow through to the other same transformers.
  • If you receive any upgrade warnings, this might mean the newer version has additional ports you need to map!
  • Any attributes with spaces in them, may introduce incomplete transformers
  • Many upgrades ask if you want to merge attributes as a default
  • Some deprecated transformers have a new complimentary transformer replaced... e.g. S3Connector

Thank you for answering - I knew about the spatial transformers, but was upgrading the transformers as a matter of course. I will focus on the ones which have most to gain by upgrading. Cheers!

There were a significant number of transformers that saw bulk mode capability added between 2018 and 2022. Highly recommend upgrading your readers and any transformers that mentions Bulk Mode in the 'Show Changes'. https://docs.safe.com/fme/html/FME-Form-Documentation/FME-Form/Workbench/Improving-Performance-Bulk-Mode.htm
