It is usually the Geometry the one that takes more space. Don't use more than two or three decimals for the coordinates.
Maybe you could try to create several GML files for the same theme, with 1000 features each for example.
Do you have any attribute that is always null? Maybe you could delete those in order to save some space.
Also consider simplifying or generalizing the geometries before writing, that can have a fairly significant impact.
