Need help to decide on which writer data format to use for publishing workbench on FME Cloud.

Hello,

here is what I am trying to do in a workbench that is attached here:

1) Input data are .xyz file with a list of 3D point coordinates, jpg + jgw files with DEM photo

2) I need to create surface TIN + set an appearance to it

3) I need to export it into a format that Trimble Connect is able to process.

(https://community.trimble.com/viewdocument/supported-files) - There is a list of 3D supported formats

The problems that I run into:

1) Data need to have a defined coordinate system.

1) I need to create a FME Cloud app, where customer is able to run this transformation themselves.

2) The formats that Trimble Connects do not support textured surfaces / solids

3) FME Cloud does not support many writers that Trimble Connect would be able to process

DGN - FME is unable to write 3D solids (only extrusions, which is not what I need) or meshes, all dgn files that I try to create are after loading simple lines.

DWG 2018 - no coordinate system, 3D data only in realdwg - cloud does not support this

DXF - same as above

IFC - as far as I know no coordinate system support

IGS - no FME support

LandXML - Trimble Connect and I believe even FME support only version 1.2 - no textures support

Navisworks - no FME support

Revit - FME Cloud does not support

SKP - FME Cloud does not support

STEP AP203 and AP214 - to be honest no idea here

TC ZIP, TEKLA, TRB - no support

I think that my process si pretty much finished, I am stuck on using a writer that Trimble Connect can read and FME Cloud write. Every tutorial on how to solve this scenario writes in 3D pdf...

Hi @Radek Žďánský,

I connected with my colleague Jen who I understand suggested that FME Cloud might not be the best solution for this workspace to run on, and due to the format limitations you’ve mentioned above, I’m thinking the same.

Before switching to FME Server hosted on a Windows machine, it might be worth giving Autodesk AutoCAD DWG (ACAD) a try as it should support coordinate systems, with the options to store the coordinate system as any combination of external PRJ, internal native, and internal WKT. According to this article, AutoCAD DWG - Which format should I use?, AutoCAD DWG (ACAD) supports primitive 3D geometries, so it might be worth a try, but I'm not sure if textures may be a problem.

If that doesn't work, I'm excited to share the news that 3D writing support for Microstation DGN is in the works and aimed for FME 2022, so maybe you can revisit this workflow for FME Cloud in the future!
