Question

FeatureReader for ESRI Geodatabase Metadata

Is there any way to get the FeatureReader to return Geodatabase Metadata? On the Geodatabase readers there is a "Feature Read Mode" parameter that allows you to choose to get Features or Metadata, but how do you specify that with the FeatureReader?

Hi Ian,

I dont think this is possible, but why should you use the feature reader for that?

This is possible, and there are indeed good reasons for this. However unless this has changed, it requires that you hack the workspace .fmw file with a text editor. See: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/fmetalk/SF5ZKICTymg

I too would like to see this exposed somehow for all the geodatabase formats.
Logan, Thanks for your response. I don't know why I didn't find your previous post when I was researching this.

I'd considered the hack you suggested, but wasn't confident that it would continue to work if the workspace was edited subsequently. What I'm currently doing is to use a python transfomer to call arcpy to export the metadata to an xml file and then read it with an AttributeFileReader. This works fine, but isn't as slick as reading it directly with fme.

I sent a note to Safe's support email and got a nice response from Robyn saying that the request had been forwarded to their development people.

Hi All,

As of Build 14258 of FME 2014 the read metadata option is now available via the FeatureReader. This build is currently available as a beta at http://www.safe.com/beta ready for downloading and testing.

Cheers,
